Emergency Page!

The BCID of a book found is wrong!

Use this emergency page on your own responsibility!

In this case, there is no simple way as with the other emergency pages. But several options will be given, so you can find out the correct BCID either by yourself or by asking the person who registered that book.

But let's start at the beginning. Each BCID of a BookCrossingbook exists of 2 numbers seperated by a dash. The first number (left side) has always 3 digits and the second number (right side) can have up to 9 digits. This second number we also call the "journal number" of the book. With this number you can find every book registered at BookCrossing.com. The first, 3 digit number exists for security purposes, meaning that only the person who knows this number together with the "journal number" (being the complete BCID) can write a journal entry to that book. In fact, everyone who had the book in his hands. :)

Now and then it happens, that a BCID can't be found at BookCrossing.com. Then you'll get an error message like those:

Posibilities to identify a book

1. The trial if the "journalnumber" is correct and therefor only the 3-digit number is wrong.

After you submitted the "journalnumber", you'll get in a new window:

· either the book, which you hold in your hands...

In this case the problem is solved: the 3-digit number of the BCID is wrong. Because the book is displayed, you see who has registered the book (journal entry 1 by ...) and you can ask the correct BCID by using the BookCrossing.com PM system (personal message).

· or you'll see the page which tell you that the "book is not in our database".

In this case you get an affirmation of the fact you already knew: the BCID is wrong. But you don't give up and you try the next possibility, described in point 2..

Please enter the journalnumber of the book:

2. The trial to search for the book with title and autor in the BookCrossing.com database.

Of course, this can be done directly at www.bookcrossing.com; the data you will enter here, will be hand over to BookCrossing.com.

After you submitted the appropriate data, you'll get in a new window:

· either a list of books, with autor and title you've entered

In this case the problem is with the utmost probability solved: in this list you'll find the book depending on registrationdata and location (registered by...) and you can ask the correct BCID by using the BookCrossing.com PM system (personal message).

If - contrary to expectations - the book is not in the list, switch over to the next paragraph of this section...

· or you'll get an error message "Sorry, we couldn't find any books matching your criteria...",

Reasons for this message could be typos while submitting the autor and title of the book, typos from the person who registered the book (just try again with wildcards [*]) or that this book - and this is most likely! - has a so called pre-numbered-label, meaning a BCID already defined by BookCrossing.com, but which becomes active at the moment the person who finds the book enters the appropriate data in the system - of course impossible if that BCID is wrong. But you don't give up and you try the next possibility, described in point 3..

Please enter some principal words of the title

Please enter the lastname from the autor:

3. Asking at the forum on BookCrossing.com.

Ok, the fewest BookCrossers are activ at the forum, but you shouldn't exclude any possibility ;)

With this link you come to the different fora on BookCrossing.com. For languages other than english, it is easy to tell you, which forum you should ask your question, because other languages, if exist, does only have one subforum. Although also activ forum readers and writers don't read all fora, I think the best way is to ask in the "Advanced Questions" forum. Or even "chit chat" (although wrong BCID isn't a chitchat theme, the chitchat forum ist the one with the most activity at all ;) Anyway, you'll need a bit luck to get the correct BCID of your book...

4. Register again?

If the 3 possibilities didn't come up with the correct BCID... well, just send me the needed data via this feedback page and I'll see what I can find out about that book.
